ABC renews The Middle March 4 2016

ABC renews The Middle

ABC has renewed The Middle for an eighth season as the network announced a raft of early renewals, breaking with its tradition of holding off on renewals until the May Upfronts.

The Middle will be returning in the 2016/17 season with Wednesday night stablemates Modern Family, The Goldbergs and black-ish. Tuesday night sitcom Fresh off the Boat is also renewed.

Following a change at the top of ABC with Channing Dungey replacing Paul Lee as president of entertainment, the network broke with its recent tradition and revealed a spate of renewals. In recent years ABC's shows have had to sweat it out until the Upfronts in mid-May before their fate was officially revealed. Even ABC's most popular sitcoms including The Middle and Modern Family, whose renewal was basically assured, were not renewed before May. ABC now not only joins the other networks in the trend of renewing shows early, but it has actually leapfrogged the other networks to secure renewals this far from the Upfronts.
