Last night's fifth season premiere of The Middle tied for first place with Fox's The X Factor in the key adults 18-49 demographic and ranked second in viewers.
"The Drop Off", which saw Axl head off to college, was watched by 8.94 million people to finish second in viewers, behind CBS's Survivor. This was the show's most-watched episode since last November, though it was slightly down on last year's hour-long fourth season premiere (8.97m).
In the adults 18-49 demographic, The Middle scored a 2.5/8 rating, matching The X Factor with both shows ranking just ahead of Survivor (2.4/7).
