Wednesday night's episode of The Middle ranked a solid second in the ratings, finishing behind the Fox juggernaut American Idol.
"The Friend" had an audience of 8.55 million people, up by 340,000 people from last week. In the key adults 18-49 demographic, The Middle scored a 2.5/7 rating, up two notches from the previous episode's 2.3/7. The Middle ranked second in the ratings by all key metrics.
