Last night's episode of The Middle finished second in key ratings, opposite the return of American Idol on Fox. American Idol dominated the night, despite a significant season-on-season drop in its ratings, but ABC's performance showed its popular comedy can still find an audience against the reality behemoth.
"Hecking It Up" was watched by 8.15 million viewers, a season low and down by 1.30m viewers from last week, and scored a 5.5/9 rating in households. The Middle finished third in total viewers, coming behind Fox's Idol and a rerun of CBS drama NCIS. In the adults 18-49 demographic, The Middle finished second with a 2.7/6 rating, matching its season low if you exclude the Thanksgiving-week episode, down from 2.9/8 last week. The Middle equaled its highest-ever Adult 18-49 numbers against American Idol.
