Heck, yes! It appears ABC is moving forward with a Sue-centric Middle spinoff. The offshoot’s headliner, Eden Sher, tells TVLine that the network has ordered a pilot for the potential series. The actress broke the news Thursday afternoon at TVLine’s Comic-Con interview suite. (ABC declined to comment.)
“We are shooting a pilot,” Sher exclaims in the above video. “I hope it gets picked up. I think it’s going to be great.”
It’s been nearly two months since ABC confirmed it was in the early stages of developing a Sue-focused offshoot.
Last May’s series finale of The Middle left off with Sue still in college, although a flash-forward revealed that she eventually married neighbor Sean (after a number of breakups and makeups). The potential spinoff would likely pick up several years after the finale but before Sue settled down with Sean, Sher shares.
“The [flash-forward] was like a ‘happily ever after,'” Sher says, adding that the new project would find “Sue being Sue as a young adult.”
If ordered to series, the untitled offshoot could, in theory, take over ABC’s Tuesday-at-8 pm time slot after Roseanne spinoff The Conners completes its 10-episode run.
Pres PLAY above to watch Sher lightly tease Sue’s next act and brainstorm potential titles for the would-be series.
Oh, I hope it gets picked up! I was so glad we got to see Sue marry sean in the finale. So, it would be cool to see Sue after college and before they get married. It’s not often you get to see a show where you already know at least one piece of the ending. It might make it a little less intense since I already know they end up together. But the last season of The Middle about killed me with all of the near misses between Sean and Sue.
“Sue settled down with Sean, Sher shares”….great tongue twister!
Lol, true!
I want this spinoff so badly! Make it happen ABC!
Best news EVER!!! I really hope the other Heck’s would make guest appearances. Fingers double crossed it gets picked up.
Will this have the same writer as The Middle?
She said in the interview that the creators, DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heiser, are writing the pilot. They wrote a lot of episodes of The Middle, including the finale.
This interview and the Brooklyn 99 interview put a huge smile on my face. Really hope that ABC follow soon through with this series.
I suggest the title being. “The Year(s) of Sue!”
I like the idea of her show replacing The Connors after that season ends.
That’s an awesome title!
What about “Sue, Me” ?
Hahaha!! :D
Really hope this series happens too!
Also isn’t Eden Sher the cutest? I definitely see Sue in her! :D
So excited about this! Hopefully Sean will still be a regular, even though it’s pre-wedding. And I really hope Brad is a regular, too.
I hope it includes Brad!
That’s great news! Love her and Sean.
Yes, please, please, please let it include Brad!
I’m definitely onboard for this. I’ve got a ton of questions though.
Fingers crossed it gets picked up!!
Eden seems so naturally gifted at the physical comedy aspect of Sue that I hope that part of the character remains intact.
My whole family is excited for this! More for this than anything new actually on the schedule!
Glad to hear Eden Sher may be getting a show of her own. It’s well-deserved. She’s by far the most talented young comedic actress out there today. Her amazing talent has made Sue Heck an iconic and beloved TV character.
Was hoping it would happen. Should be pretty funny. 🤗
This and Growish would make great anchors for a new TGIF. Just sayin.
Grownish*
Sue is awesome.
I hope Lexi and Sean are in this spinoff as main characters as well.
Who would Sue be without them?
Yes. That would be great since they got married IRL
Who got married IRL? Sean and Sue or Sean and Lexi or Sue and Lexi?
Beau Wirick (Sean) married Daniela Bobadilla (Lexi) just this month! Jen Ray (Nancy Donahue) is actually who first made the announcement (including photos posted on Jen’s Instagram.) Beau, Daniella and Jen are all very religious and do a lot of volunteer/overseas mission work with Patricia Heaton. So nice to know these people really care for each other and are so close off screen, too.
Looking forward to it! Sue Sue Heck is delightful and Eden rocks the role.
I would definitely watch a Sue Heck spin-off!!!!!
I really hope that The Middle spinoff comes on ABC. I would watch it. Eden Sher is so funny. She played Sue Heck for 9 years. She could play her again for many more years. She is so funny, that she could probably do stand up comedy. I wish her good luck with the new series if it is shown on ABC.
Ugggg…will not be watching!!!
I would watch…if she had married darrin
Most wonderful news since… FOREVER!!! So much love and respect for Sue Heck/Eden Sher. Both the character and actress are such exemplary role models.
I was so sad when the show ended. I really hope this gets picked up. The show felt like it was real life and there problems I could relate to. Hope to see Sue Sue Heck back!!!!
Hard to say if it will work or not.
but, then again, I didn’t think Young Sheldon would work, but it proved me wrong.
Sue Heck was / is undoubtedly a delightful character, but can she become the main character in a spin off comedy is another question.
I think she would have to morph some towards Frankie, but as a Frankie like character as an upper middle class.
Hey, maybe that is the title of this spinoff “The Upper Middle”
